Basle Symphony Orchestra

The Basel Symphony Orchestra is the. biggest and one if the most significant orchestras in Switzerland. It was established in 1997 with the merging of two of the orchestras which had been in existance for a long time, the Basel Symphony Orchestra and the Radio Symphony Orchestra of Basel.

The Orchestra's great reputation lead to many invitations to significant festivals such as the Luzerner Festwochen. From 2003 to 2006 the Slovenian Marko Letjona took the position of music director for the orchestra and the Theatre of Basel. Beginning with the season 2009/10 the American Dennis Russell Davies, leader of the Bruckner Orchestra Linz took over the position of chief conductor. In 2010, a tour of China lead the Symphony Orchestra of Basel to the world exhibition Expo 2010 in Shanghai (among other things) where it represented Switzerland as the only Swiss orchestra.
